MAIDAN SHAHR, Afghanistan, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Nine people were killed and a dozen others sustained injuries as heavy rains and flood hit parts of Afghanistan's Wardak province, 35 km west of Kabul on Tuesday and Wednesday, spokesman for provincial government Ataullah Khogyani said Thursday.

"Nine people have been confirmed dead and 12 others injured due to heavy rains and floods that washed away several houses in Jaghatu, Chak, Nurkh and Sayed Abad districts on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning," Khogyani told Xinhua.

He added that efforts are underway to assist the affected people in the flood-hit areas.

Some 100 people have lost their lives in the rains and flooding in parts of Afghanistan over the past couple of weeks.
